What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism, also known as corneal irregularity, is a refractive error. People affected by it perceive both distant and nearby objects as blurred. The cause is an anatomical unevenness of the cornea, which prevents light from being correctly focused on the retina.

Astigmatism often occurs in combination with other vision problems. It can be congenital or develop over time.

While mild forms of astigmatism often go unnoticed, more pronounced cases can cause clearly perceptible visual disturbances. In children, astigmatism can even lead to a permanent reduction in visual acuity.

What symptoms does astigmatism cause?

Astigmatism leads to a distorted perception of the environment. The eye constantly tries to compensate for this blur, which can result in headaches, eye strain, and burning eyes. When corrected — for example, with suitable glasses or laser treatment —the eye can relax, and these symptoms usually subside.

How can astigmatism be corrected?

Astigmatism can be easily corrected with contact lenses or suitable eyeglasses. Cylindrical or toric lenses are used to bring the two focal lines together at a single focal point.

Alternatively, astigmatism can also be corrected using laser eye surgery. We are happy to provide you with comprehensive advice in a free initial consultation and recommend the laser treatment best suited to your needs.
