In Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) – also known as RLA – the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial one, called an intraocular lens (IOL).

These lenses are specifically developed for permanent use inside the eye and are custom-tailored to each patient’s visual needs. This procedure is particularly suitable for individuals with severe refractive errors or age-related farsightedness – and it is also an effective way to prevent or treat cataracts, as the natural, clouded lens is removed. Free Initial Consultation

Every treatment begins with a non-binding and free initial consultation. During this appointment, we assess your suitability and discuss the expected outcomes in detail.

Preliminary Examinations

Using state-of-the-art technology, we perform comprehensive preliminary examinations and take time for both diagnostics and your questions. If we jointly decide on the Refractive Lens Exchange, we will inform you in detail about the steps before and after the procedure.

On the Day of Treatment

On the day of your treatment, we kindly ask you not to wear makeup, face cream, perfume, or aftershave, as these may irritate the eyes. You can eat and drink normally before the procedure. Before we begin, we’ll gladly answer any final questions and explain the next steps.

Procedure of Refractive Lens Exchange

Step-by-Step to Success

The procedure takes a maximum of fifteen minutes.

Step 1

Preparation

You can eat and drink normally before the procedure, as we will only numb your eye with eye drops.

Step 2

Small Incision

A tiny, millimeter-sized incision is made. This incision is not visible to the naked eye, does not require special care, and heals on its own within a short time.

Step 3

Removal of the “Old” Lens

Next, the body’s natural lens is removed. To do this, it is gently liquefied and carefully extracted through the incision without causing pain. The capsular bag is left in place to support the artificial lens inside the eye.

Step 4

New Lens

Next, the custom-fitted intraocular lens is carefully checked once more and then gently inserted through the incision into the eye. The capsular bag serves as a support and positions the lens perfectly.

Anschließend verabreichen wir Ihnen infektionsvorbeugende und entzündungshemmende Augentropfen und setzen Ihnen für weiteren Schutz einen Uhrglasverband auf. Im Anschluss werden die Augen noch einmal kontrolliert. Zudem vereinbaren wir gleich einen Termin zur Nachkontrolle mit Ihnen.

After the RLE Treatment

Follow-Up Examinations

  • 1. First check-up: immediately after the procedure
  • 2. Second check-up: one day after the procedure
  • 3. Third check-up: one week after the procedure
  • All further follow-up appointments are scheduled individually as needed. For this purpose, our ophthalmologist's office is available to you.
