Laser Treatment for Nearsightedness at the Laser Eye Center 1180 Vienna

Nearsightedness (myopia) of up to –10 diopters can be corrected easily, safely, and quickly using laser technology.
The laser precisely reshapes the cornea to correct the refractive error. After the treatment, you can immediately enjoy life without glasses or contact lenses.

We are happy to provide you with comprehensive advice during a free initial consultation and recommend the laser eye treatment best suited to your needs.

What causes nearsightedness?

Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is a refractive error of the eye. People with myopia cannot see distant objects clearly. In normal (emmetropic) eyes, the focal point lies directly on the retina. In myopic eyes, the focal point lies in front of the retina.

There are two causes of nearsightedness:

  • The eyeball is too long. This is called "axial myopia."
  • The refractive power of the optical system — that is, the cornea, aqueous humor, and lens — is too strong. This form of nearsightedness is called "refractive myopia" or “index myopia.”

If the cornea is the cause of the refractive change, it is called "curvature myopia." If the lens has an altered refractive power, it is referred to as "lenticular myopia."

What types of Myopia are there?

The severity of myopia is measured in negative diopters. Depending on the degree of visual impairment, we distinguish between:

1. Myopia simplex

This is the most common form of nearsightedness. It typically reaches up to –6 diopters and causes relatively mild visual limitations. It is not considered a disease, but a physiological variation.

2. Degenerative Myopie (Malignant Myopia)

This is a medical condition. In most cases, the visual impairment exceeds –6 diopters. It is often caused by a congenital deformation of the posterior part of the eye.

When does nearsightedness develop?

Myopia can be congenital (degenerative myopia). It typically develops during childhood or adolescence and may progress until the mid-20s.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a temporary form of myopia can occur (often called "maternal myopia"). In almost all cases, this form regresses after weaning.

How is myopia diagnosed?

Myopia is usually detected by puberty at the latest, as this is when rapid anatomical changes occur. Many individuals see well during early childhood, but once a growth spurt begins, the eyeball elongates, and distant objects often become blurry. Therefore, regular eye examinations, especially during childhood and adolescence, are very important.

What symptoms does myopia cause?

Because distant objects appear blurry, road signs may only be recognized at the last moment when driving —posing a risk to the individual and others. Schoolchildren often struggle to read the blackboard, which can negatively affect their learning. These issues can be quickly and easily corrected with the right glasses, contact lenses, or laser eye treatment.

How can nearsightedness be corrected?

There are several ways to treat myopia:

Nearsightedness can be easily corrected with contact lenses or glasses. These visual aids use divergent (concave) lenses to reduce the eye's overall refractive power. The lenses expand the incoming light beam before it reaches the eye, so that distant objects can once again be properly focused on the retina. In most cases, myopia is corrected using such visual aids.

Alternatively, myopia can also be corrected using laser eye surgery. We are happy to offer you a comprehensive consultation during a free initial appointment and recommend the laser treatment best suited to your needs.

Only state-of-the-art Schwind technology is used for laser eye treatments at our clinic.
This system features multiple safety mechanisms, including 7D eye tracking,
which allows the laser to respond to the smallest eye movements within milliseconds
and to pause the treatment immediately if necessary.

In addition, the laser works only on the outermost layer of the cornea.
As a result, complications or even blindness from laser eye surgery are completely ruled out.

There is no upper age limit for laser eye surgery.
Whether you are generally suitable for treatment depends on several factors,
including age, type of visual impairment, eye anatomy, medical history, and lifestyle.
