Correction of Refractive Errors Using a Microkeratome

LASIK with Microkeratome is the classic method for correcting refractive errors. In this procedure, our state-of-the-art Schwind AMARIS 1050RS Excimer Laser is used in combination with the microkeratome.
During the treatment, the cornea is opened using a scalpel, the so-called microkeratome. The refractive error is then corrected using the excimer laser.

Every treatment begins with a non-binding, free initial consultation. During this meeting, we assess your suitability and discuss the expected results in detail.

Preliminary examinations 

Using state-of-the-art technology, we carry out comprehensive diagnostic tests and take the time to answer your questions. If you and our team decide on the LASIK Microkeratome method, we will provide detailed information about the procedure and its aftercare.

On the Day of Treatment

We kindly ask you to avoid using makeup, face creams, perfume, or aftershave, as these can irritate the eyes. You may eat and drink normally before the procedure. Before starting the treatment, we’ll answer any final questions and explain the next steps in detail. 

Procedure of the LASIK Microkeratome Treatment

Step-by-step to success

The actual laser treatment takes no more than ten minutes. 

Step 1

Preparation

You may eat and drink as usual before the procedure, as we only numb your eye using eye drops.

Step 2

Micro-precision instrumen

First, the top layer  of the is prepared using the so-called microkeratome, creating a thin flap. This flap is then gently folded back for the duration of the treatment.

Step 3

Laser Treatment

The refraktive error is corrected using the excimer laser, which only takes a few seconds. Thanks to the eye tracking system, the laser works with extreme precision and can instantly respond to even the slightest eye movements.

Step 4

Completion of Treatment

After the laser correction, the flap is immediatly repositioned. It adheres naturally ad and heals within the following days fusing with the rest oft he cornea.

Step 5

Desinfection & protection

You will then receive anti-inflammatory and antibacterial eye drops, and a protective contact lens will be applied.

Follow-Up Check

Your eyes will be checked again after the procedure. We’ll also schedule your follow-up appointment during this visit.

After the LASIK Microkeratome Treatment

Follow-up Examinations

  • First check-up: immediately after treatment
  • Second check-up: one day after treatment
  • Third check-up: one week after treatment
  • Further follow-up appointments are scheduled individually as needed. For this purpose, our opthalmologist’s office is available to you.

The LASIK Microkeratome method is only performed at our eye clinic if the stability of your vision has been confirmed. Once this is the case, your prescription should no longer change significantly. The laser treatment, therefore, leads to a permanent result.

No, that is not possible. The laser works only on the outermost layer of the cornea.

At our eye clinic, we exclusively use state-of-the-art technology from Schwind for laser eye treatments. This system features multiple safety mechanisms, including 7D eye tracking, which allows the laser to react to even the smallest eye movements within milliseconds and stop the treatment instantly if needed. Moreover, the laser only acts on the outermost layer of the cornea. Therefore, serious complications or even blindness from laser eye surgery can be ruled out.

To allow your eyes to heal, it is recommended to avoid working for 3 to 5 days after the treatment. This recovery period may vary individually and will be discussed with you in detail during your pre-examination.
